3 medium Starfruits
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate (or white chocolate) pieces
1 tablespoon solid vegetable shortening (not butter or margarine)
Wash and dry the fruit. Cut crosswise into ¼-inch-thick slices. Place the slices on paper towels and dry them very well (chocolate will not stick to wet fruit).
Combine the chocolate and shortening in a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat until melted, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat.
Dip half of one star fruit slice into dark chocolate until coated, allowing the excess chocolate to drip back into the pan. Place on a wax paper-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining star fruit and chocolate.
Chill the fruit in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, or until chocolate is set. Serve the day it is made. You may also use white baking chocolate bars for dipping. Makes 2 to 2 1/2 dozen chocolate-dipped pieces.
